We are involved with a number of projects, in collaboration with our partner NGOs in Gorkha. A number of these projects have been running for a number of years. We encourage volunteers and electives to get involved where possible.
Funding of these projects depends on fundraising from the UK.
To give you some idea of the costs involved in projects and sponsorship possibilities:-
School children sponsorship – Sponsor school children for only £30.00 a year per child. This will provide books, uniform and any school fees for the year. When possible letters may be exchanged and photographs and updates from the school are often provided by volunteers on visits to the school.
Hygiene project -Sponsor a hygiene education programme – £120 which provides 10 training sessions on hygiene for a class in a school and each child will get soap, toothbrush and toothpaste and nail clippers for their personal hygiene as well as cleaning equipment for the school.
School Toilet -School toilet project – Our latest project is to provide proper toilets in schools which cost approximately £3,000 per school but we request that at least one third is raised by the school often through the use of parents labour. Proper toilets make a massive difference in reducing the risk of the many diseases linked with poor sanitation.
Nurse Sponsorship – Sponsor nurse training for £300. A complete training course of 15 months will enable the trained nurse to practice in a remote rural village
School Jumpers for children made by local women -aprox £4.00 per jumper. This is a programme currently being developed and would hope that it starts in 2013 as it will provide income for the women as well as warmth for the children in school.
GWA Support the Gorkha Women’s Association by providing funds for their annual room rental, stationary and running costs. £300 a year will enable the group to meet regularly and undertake training and craft workshops, as well as providing a base for their cottage industry skills such as sewing and weaving
Childrens Clinics – Were sponsored for over 10 years at about £500 per year for rural clinics. These are now undertaken by the Hospital.
