Volunteers -
Teaching, Especially English Language and Vocational
Skills
We
would be pleased to hear from anyone who is interested in having the holiday of
a lifetime in Nepal, in return for at least 3 weeks teaching in a primary
school in Gorkha, a college in Gorkha, a multi-age school in Nareswar or a
school further into the mountains. Board and lodging, trekking and other
excursions have been offered free by people in Gorkha. However, a contibution
to the hosehold expenses would be appreciated.
Formal qualifications
are not essential. Vocational training help is needed in a variety of skills.
Nursing and medical help would also be most desirable. A nurse has already
volunteered to help in village clinics and to assess local needs. It is hoped
that this will encourage others to follow at regular intervals.
Sponsorship, Funds, Materials and
Shipping
We should like to
thank the many individuals and organisations who have helped finance the
projects to date. Here are some of the ways in which we have helped in the past
and in which we would like to continue to assist the people of Gorkha
Region.
- With sponsorship
for poor children to attend government schools in outlying villages at
£10 per child per year. This scheme is administered for us by The Child
First NGO.
- With sponsorship
of very poor children to attend a private school in Gorkha town at the rate of
£25 ($40) per child per year to provide clothing, registration and
examination fees, books and stationery.
- With the
provision of toilets and the funding of repair work for schools and the supply
of school and medical equipment. With the aid of many people, we managed to
ship 1.5 tons of books to a college in Gorkha. This was the largest
effort, but much more has been done and we would like to
continue.
- Help with medical clinics for villages which have been
set up by the Youth Movement for Environment, Gorkha. Five areas are served, so
far. £350 ($560) per year pays for one clinic to include the salary for a
qualified nurse, incidental help, medical supplies and
equipment.
- Assistance with
shipping would be most helpful. We have sent some medical supplies, but the
cost of safe transport is high.
- By encouraging
re-forrestation through school based projects. Schoolchildren at Bindyabasini
School (Nareswar) have planted hundreds of trees in their
locality.
- By helping school
farm projects, bringing together Nepalese and UK institutions and self help
groups in the Gorkha District.
- By helping the
Gorkha Womens Association with literacy, hand craft and
agriculture projects.
