We are sad to announce the loss of GDHEDS founder and long term committee member in Gorkha, Perusotum Aryall. 40 years ago Headmaster Perustum met an English lady on the remote footpath near his school. This lady was Joy Leighton, he invited her to join him at his school and the rest is history. Together […]
After sourcing the items requested, in Kathmandu and Chitwan, the vendors loaded boxes onto buses which took 2 days to reach Gorkha, due to large sections of the highway missing, caused by the heavy monsoon rain and landslides. In Gorkha the team sorted into 80 packages each containing kitchen items, clothing and undergarments plus items […]
The main highway from Kathmandu to Gorkha was closed and many rural roads and bridges washed away due to the flooding, landslides and the current monsoon season. Though supplies requested by the flood torn region have now been sourced from Gorkha, Chitwan and Kathmandu, the GDHEDS team in Gorkha are facing such difficulties to get […]
Please help us to help the people of Nepal. We have friends on the ground getting supplies to take to these areas in desperate need. All funds raised will be used to help people effected by the floods of Nepal. CLICK HERE.
As the wider devastation from the floods unfolds then the scale of help needed seems insurmountable. One of our Trustees in the UK, Amir, lived for 3 years in the area affected. He confirmed that whole villages have been washed away or buried in mud, about 50 kilometers of roads have disappeared and 40 bridges […]
We all share with the world our great shock and sadness as we hear of the recent disaster affecting our beloved Nepal. Though the epicentre and flood are not directly in the area we work, still the effects reach the community as we hear of local people missing and families affected. GDS in the UK […]
We were lucky enough to be invited to share in the 50 year celebrations at one of the local schools. It was a three day extravaganza of speeches, dancing, music, prizes and performances and it was a lovely way to start to see and understand more of the culture and the tremendous amount of work […]

They were also greeted by their host family and welcomed into the Gorkha community. Tess and Sam spent 3 months working with children in schools and the Higher Education campus, as […]
GDS have funded uniforms for an additional 65 children in four Gorkha schools totaling £550. Our excellent hygiene programme has taken place, back in the summer, for the first time since Covid. Gorkha hospital confirmed that the lack of understanding relating to hygiene remains a cause of disease and illness especially in children. The classes held over 12 weeks are run by the women’s group GWA but this time were […]
Our committee in Gorkha GDHEDS, held a meeting recently and will soon be celebrating their 25th AGM. It’s a great milestone of our working together and recognised in a message from Chair Laxman: “Dear All, I express my sincere gratitude for your wonderful presence in the 25th Annual General Meeting of GODHEDS Gorkha. This was […]
Funding was recently requested for a teacher training programme in Barpak. As always this is something we love to support with Laxman and the team, providing two days of classes to inspire 35 teachers from a number of schools in the remote area of Barpak at a cost of just £350! Helen had the opportunity […]

After completing his Elective programme in Gorkha hospital, Yong Kumar, Sarita and Kalpana made a traditional presentation to say farewell. Alistair has now completed his final year medical studies at Edinburgh University and we would like to thank him for volunteering through GDS. Congratulations Alistair on passing and we wish you well in your […]
Medical Elective Alistair has kept us updated with his experience to date, in the Gorkha hospital. We weren’t sure what to expect as this is a new hospital so a bit unknown. However, it clearly has been a varied and valuable placement. He has spent time in the Emergency Department, Paediatrics, Theatre and Gynaecology. Such […]
Alistair was welcomed at the hospital and is developing an understanding of the staffing and departments at the new hospital. Receiving our first Elective placement since pre-covid, this is an exciting renewal of a hopefully long standing collaboration between GDS, GDHEDS and Gorkha Hospital.
Great news, Alistair Higgins from Edinburgh University has arrived in Gorkha, to undertake a one month placement at the Gorkha Hospital. He was given a warm welcome by our GDHEDS committee, which included President Laxman, Yong Kumar and Sarita. Alistair messaged us to say ‘it was absolutely amazing and I am very excited for the […]
