Gorkha Health & Education Development Scheme
How it Started & Progress to 1998

The scheme was started in 1988 by Joy Leighton following a trekking holiday in Nepal. It was set up to provide volunteers and funds to promote education, health, social welfare, environmental and constructional projects in the Gorkha Region of western Nepal. Gorkha is located about 110km to the west of Kathmandu.

The following progress has been achieved over the past 10 years:

  • Voluntary help in schools and Drabya Shah College.
  • Large quantities of books and school equipment have been shipped to Nepal.
  • Funds have been raised to send the poorest children to school - £25 per child.
  • Repairs to school buildings and the provision of  school toilets have been funded.
  • Help and funds have been given to set up a school farm and run a re-forrestation  project.
  • Assistance and funds have been given to facilitate the formation on the Gorkha Women’s Association (GWA). GWA projects have included hand craft and vegetable growing projects and a village health education scheme.
  • A bio-gas scheme has been proposed and adopted.
  • Help has been obtained from Water Aid. A feasibility study is in progress to provide water, sanitation and health education facilities.
  • The Gorkha Youth Movement has started clinics in villages surrounding Gorkha. The charity is now funding these clinics.
All the above are on-going projects.

Report on current projects by Linda Mason, 1997

In 1998, a qualified British nurse offered to come to Gorkha to help with clinics and a local hospital. She is currently raising funds and collecting medical supplies for this purpose.

In 1998 the organisation was registered as a charity with the UK  Charity Commission.
