Gorkha is a region situated approximately 110km north west of Kathmandu. the town of Gorkha is in the foothills of the Himalayas, to the south of the region. 

King Prithvi Narayan Shah was the well respected king, born in the Gorkha Durbah (a palace/temple) who, during the last half of the 18th century, united the states of Nepal. He is still greatly revered for his wisdom, tolerance and justice. 

Gorkha was the name of the fearless soldiers of the region, who later became known as the Gurkhas.
